US to give Romania USD 14m for SMR development study

The US government and NuScale Power will provide Romania with USD 14m for a study on how to implement a small modular reactor (SMR) nuclear plant in that country, the White House said on Monday.
In May, Nuclearelectrica, the operator of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, said that Romania’s first SMR would be built in the rural commune of Doicesti in central Romania.The US government has now said in a press release that the SMR project in Romania is “meant to mobilise a multi-billion-dollar effort and showcase US ingenuity in the advanced nuclear sector, accelerate the clean energy transition, create thousands of jobs, and strengthen European energy security while upholding the highest standards for nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation.”
It is estimated that the study will cost USD 28m in total and take 8 months to conduct. Nuclearelectrica will also make a financial contribution towards this end.
The study will provide Romania with key site-specific data, such as cost, construction, schedule, and licensing details, which are necessary for the deployment of the SMR unit.
Nuclearelectrica signed an agreement with the US company NuScale Power in November to build a six-module SMR with a capacity of 462 MWe.
In mid-June, the Romanian government also highlighted that it is considering whether it can use the EU Modernisation Fund to implement the SMR project.
