Serbian company Eko Step Pellet launched a 1 MW rooftop solar power plant on its pellet producing facilities in Petrovac na Mlavi in central Serbia on Tuesday, the country’s Renewable Energy Association (RES) said.

The company built the solar power plant for its own needs with the possibility of returning surplus electricity to the public distribution grid in accordance with the law governing use of renewable energy sources, thus becoming the largest prosumer in Serbia, RES said in a statement.

The solar power plant is projected to generate 1.3 GWh of electricity a year. It will save around 22% on power costs annually and reduce CO2 emissions by 1,100 tonnes per year, RES added.

A decree introducing the prosumer category was endorsed by Serbia's parliament in August 2021. It stipulates that households and small companies that produce solar power can send any surplus electricity to the grid if they do not use it themselves.

According to this new legislation, households can only produce electricity for self-consumption and not for sale.

Net metering applies to households and residential buildings, while businesses are subject to net billing.

Serbia currently produces 70% of its energy from coal. The remainder of its domestic power production is generated by renewables, with most of it coming from hydropower.
