Romanian natural gas producer Romgaz has committed to reducing its emissions by at least 10% by 2030 and reaching carbon neutrality by 2050, according to the company’s 2021-2030 strategy which was published on Thursday.

Romgaz intends to achieve these reductions by developing an energy producing portfolio that is based on low-carbon energy production, hydrogen and renewables.

According to the strategy, Romgaz will increase its solar capacity to a minimum of 180 MW by 2030. It also mentions that a 60 MW solar power plant near the Halanga lignite-fired plant should be operational by the end of 2023.

Furthermore, the strategy stipulates that the company will focus on gas-fired electricity production with reduced emissions and examine the options for green hydrogen production. Feasibility studies will be conducted to determine where and how this new gas-fired capacity should be constructed. Possible locations mentioned in the document are the towns of Halanga and Mintia, as well as the coastal city of Constanta.

The strategy also envisages an extension in the production life of Romgaz’s mature gas fields and exploration for new ones. Romgaz believes that this will keep the rate of decline in its natural gas exploitation under 2.5% annually during this timeframe.

In October, Romgaz reached an agreement with US group ExxonMobil on the acquisition of its 50% stake in the Black Sea gas project Neptun Deep. If Romgaz completes the transaction, Neptun Deep would be its second offshore gas project in the Black Sea

Meanwhile, Romgaz expects its 430 MW gas-fired unit at the Iernut power plant to be completed by the end of 2022.
