The UK-based renewables developer Hive Energy has secured land in Serbia for three renewables projects with a combined capacity of 450 MW and has another 14 projects with 2.2 GW of capacity in the pipeline.

“We expect to secure land [in Serbia] for an additional 40 MW project, and by mid-2023, our hope is to secure a further 290 MW,” Hive Energy announced on LinkedIn on Thursday. The company added that it is also exploring investment opportunities in neighbouring Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

According to the project pipeline published on Hive Energy’s website, this new capacity in Serbia will employ solar technology.

However, when asked for confirmation of this, Bojan Bajceta, Hive Energy’s regional manager for South-east Europe, said in a written response on Friday that “until the projects develop, we are unfortunately unable to provide any further details about the project locations, specifications, or financing.”

Legal amendments

In January, the Serbian energy and mining ministry released long-awaited draft amendments to the law governing the use of renewable energy sources with the aim of spurring renewables deployment.

“The expected changes will resolve issues that have emerged since the law was introduced – especially those that pertain to the balancing of power and grid connection issues,” Hive Energy said in the announcement.

Public calls for wind auctions can be expected in Q2 2023 if the proposed amendments are adopted.

Serbia’s plan is to install 1 GW of renewable energy capacity in the next three years and to reach 2 GW in the next five.
