“Plastic is one of the biggest environmental threats to our planet today. We are fast approaching what will be called the Plastic Earth.” But Eva Štraser, a founder of Evegreen, has a solution.

17 09 prvAt the Evegreen startup, founded by Eva Straser in the Saleska Valley, also home to a Slovenian coal mine and coal-fired power plant, they realized that “plastic is one of the biggest environmental threats to our planet today, and plastic waste is piled up day after day, year after year, thus we are fast approaching what will be called the Plastic Earth.” So they asked themselves: “Do we really want that?”

Plastic is not just plastic. It’s a problem!

According to the Evegreen webpage, “every minute, people around the world buy more than a million plastic products. Not only is plastic everywhere, there are warnings that microplastics, which seeps from landfills into rivers, seas and oceans also enters our food chain in the form of water, toothpaste, fish, etc. Every year, more than 7 million tons are uncontrollably released into the environment, largely into the seas.”

For example: how to transform brewery waste from local breweries, or how to transform coffee processing waste from coffee importers, or how to transform paper waste from medium-size European companies and turn it into useful products which are actually fully recyclable without any additional treatment.

When talking about people’s behaviour and how Evegreen approaches their customers, in the latest Energetika.NET video interview - a part of the ‘Cleantech entrepreneurs for a sustainable future’ series conducted by Energetika.NET for its energy sector audience and supported by WorldChicago - Eva Štraser gives us a picture of their number one customer, or so called persona.

Startups, go out there and get to know your customers!

“After a year of research, we found out that our number one customer for garden products is a woman aged 45 to 68. She has minimum of two gardens and she is a member of different Facebook gardening groups. And it's interesting that in the last ten years, she had some kind of malady, such as cancer. So, this is also the reason why she cares and why she decides to buy our product. And she makes this choice every year.”

“It’s really necessary to understand customer behaviour. Otherwise you will not be on the market,” Eva stresses.

When sharing the experiences they gained from these programmes and the key takeaways, Eva Štraser is convinced that startups need to leave their comfort zone if they want to succeed. She is delighted when she recalls the climate boot camp in Frankfurt that they were invited to as one of 90 eco startups.

A sustainable future needs living examples

All this lead Eva to become a mentor herself, and part of her professional work involves instructing Slovenian teachers how to use the different ways of thinking to develop new innovative products. This means that she passes her knowledge on to help shape the sustainable future, since the teachers under her mentorship will convey their newly acquired knowledge to the youngest generations.

Since, according to her, every problem has a solution, whether it takes the form of degradable flower pot or a sustainable cemetery candle made out of organic materials, which – by the way – both received awards as national innovations conferred by the national Chamber of Commerce and industry in 2019 and 2020.

Another one of their goals is to establish a minimum of twenty business collaborations with different European medium-sized companies that have waste which Evegreen can use for their products. See what else Eva had to say about the future, as well as her belief that certain European directives should be more in line with real-life needs.
