EPBiH is planning to build two floating solar power plants with a combined capacity of 16 MW in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Anes Kazagic, the head of its strategy department, told Montel on Wednesday.

The power utility would install 12 MW of floating solar capacity on Modrac lake and another 4 MW on Snijeznica lake, Kazagic said on the fringes of an energy conference in BiH's capital Sarajevo.

The 4 MW solar power plant will also include a battery energy storage system, he added.

According to Kazagic, the EBRD has expressed interest in financing these projects, which have an estimated total value of around EUR 13m.

Construction work could start this autumn, pending funding approval, and should take up to a year and a half to complete, he added.

In 2021, EPBiH earmarked several open-pit coal mines, as well as some ash and slag deposit sites, for solar power projects as part of its long-term decarbonisation plan. According to the company's 2023-2025 business plan, it aims to start building 40 MW of renewable energy capacity this year.

EPBiH, the largest of BiH's three power utilities, operates two coal-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 1,165 MW, three hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 517 MW and the 48 MW Podvelezje wind park.
