Demand for rooftop solar installations among Croatian households and businesses which began in earnest last year is continuing to grow with a six-fold increase in grid-connected solar capacity recorded in 2022.

Over 23 MW of rooftop solar capacity was installed in January 2023 alone, bringing overall rooftop solar capacity to more than 244 MW, according to data given to Montel by the state-owned power utility Hep.

In January, 520 households added almost 3.4 MW of rooftop solar capacity, while businesses installed 144 rooftop solar installations with a combined capacity of almost 20 MW.

High energy prices and subsidies for rooftop solar installations have increased national sales for one of the biggest Croatian photovoltaic module manufacturers, Solvis, especially after the government set a zero VAT rate for solar installations in October.

A decade ago the company, which is based in the northern city of Varazdin, was exporting over 90% of their products. However, last year 30% of the 300 MW of solar capacity they manufactured was bought domestically.

In an e-mailed interview with Montel, Solvis said that administrative procedures for rooftop solar installations had been simplified in recent years, and that it now took households just three to four months to complete the process.
