Albania greenlights 76 MW of new solar capacity

The Albanian government has granted initial permission for the development of four new projects that should add 76 MW of solar capacity to the country’s energy portfolio, it said in a statement on Thursday.

The Fortis Energy and Construction company has expressed an interest in building a 38.9 MW solar farm in the Fier region near the Adriatic coast. The company Euron intends to build a 25 MW solar farm in that same region.

The companies Atlas Millis, Besniku and Gega-G have joined forces to build a 10 MW solar farm in Librazhd, close to the central town of Elbasan, while iNova Development also plans to build a 2 MW solar farm in the region of Himara, close to the southern sea port of Vlora.

None of these projects will benefit from state subsidies and all of the produced electricity will be sold on the open market.

The government’s initial permission is simply a green light for these companies to begin permitting procedures. Before they can start construction, they still need to obtain permits from the energy regulator and other state bodies and it may take years for actual power production to commence.

Almost all of Albania’s domestic power is generated by hydropower, but given frequent droughts in recent years, the government is now encouraging the development of power production facilities that are based on renewable energy sources, gas and fuel oil.
