Albania has granted initial permission for four companies to install a total of 76 MW of solar capacity in the western region of Fier, the energy ministry said on its website on Saturday.

Sova Solar System plans to build a 50 MW solar farm and Infra Solar will install another, 22 MW farm. Samasol and Sun Energy Solutions will also install 2 MW of capacity each in the same region.

According to a 2021 report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena), Albania has 220 sunshine days per year, giving it 2,700 hours of adequate sunshine to feed solar panels for electricity production. It also has the technical potential to install 2,378 MW of solar capacity by 2030, says the report.

However, despite having one of the most favourable sunshine ratios in Europe, Albania had only managed to install 23 MW of solar capacity by the end of last year.

The small Balkan country relies too heavily on its water resources for energy production and in recent years it has been trying to diversify its energy portfolio by issuing numerous permits for renewable energy projects, most of which are for solar capacity.

In April, Albania’s energy regulator ERE reported that the country plans to add 224 MW of new renewable energy production capacity in 2022 and 2023 to reduce its overreliance on hydropower.
