EFT Rite Stanari is considering 2028 as the start date of coal excavation at a new mine in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) for which it received environmental permit, it told Montel on Tuesday.

BiH’s energy company has started developing a new open cast pit at a cost of around EUR 50m, as coal reserves at the existing mine which feeds the 300 MW Stanari power plant will be depleted by that year, it said.

The company’s spokesperson told Montel that the assembly of the excavation and dumping equipment is scheduled for 2024, and the commissioning of the excavator, conveyors and stacker system is planned for early 2025.

“Uncovering at the Ostruznja surface mine must begin before the coal reserves in the northern part of the basin are depleted in order to uncover sufficient coal quantities available for excavation and continuous supply to the Stanari power plant,” the spokesperson said.

The only privately-owned coal-fired power plant in BiH, commissioned in 2016 near the northern town of Doboj, is part of the EFT Group, an energy trading and investment company which focuses on western, central and south-eastern Europe.

EFT Rite Stanari told Montel in November that it aims to fully replace coal with renewable energy sources by 2040
