The Serbian government has adopted the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) that foresees a 33.6% share for renewables in the country’s gross final energy consumption by 2030, the energy minister said late on Thursday.

The share is lower than the 40.7% demanded by the Energy Community, which Serbia is a member of.

However, energy minister Dubravka Djedovic-Handanovic said that the NECP, which includes projections until 2050, is aligned with Europe’s vision for energy sector decarbonisation and represents a “roadmap” for Serbia’s energy transition.

“This plan is tailored to the characteristics of our energy sector and the imperative that our citizens and economy can rely on secure supply at all times,” she said.
Djedovic-Handanovic noted that the NECP focuses on renewable energy investments, with approximately 3.5 GW of new solar and wind power plants set to be connected to the grid by 2030. The share of renewables in the country’s energy generation mix is foreseen at 45.2% by the end of 2030.

“This means that nearly every second megawatt hour of electricity produced will come from clean sources,” she noted.

The implementation of measures set by the NECP will help the Western Balkan country reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40.3% compared to 1990’s levels, Djedovic-Handanovic noted.
This target is aligned with the Energy Community’s recommendations.

By 2030, Serbia plans to reduce the share of coal in its electricity mix by a maximum of 25% from levels in 2019, meaning that at the turn of this decade coal will still account for approximately half of the country’s total power generation.
