Energo, a local gas distribution and heating company in the northern coastal Croatian city of Rijeka, is planning to operate 3.67 MW of electricity production capacity at cogeneration plants by the end of 2023.

The company plans to sell this electricity to one of the electricity companies, although it is “generally interested” in PPA contracts in the future, it told Montel in an e-mailed statement.

The total investment value of these cogeneration plants will be EUR 14.9m, with just over EUR 11m provided by EU co-financing.

Energo currently operates cogeneration engines in the Malonji heating plant, which have 1.1 MW of thermal and 0.81 MW of electrical capacity. It is installing cogeneration engines in the Gornja Vezica heating plant, which will have 2.64 MW of thermal and 2.41 MW of electrical capacity.

The company plans to install smaller cogeneration engines with 0.67 MW of thermal and 0.45 MW of electrical capacity at the Srdoci heating plant in November.

The new cogeneration plants will also be ready for the use of hydrogen and natural gas blends, while a significant portion of the company’s existing gas network can already be used to transport hydrogen, as the company believes it will play a “crucial role in balancing the power system.”

Energo is also exploring other investments in renewable energy technologies, which include green hydrogen, heat pumps for use in central heating and cooling systems, biomethane gas generated from waste landfills, and solar panels for water heating or electricity production, it said in its statement.
