Independent flexibility aggregator Sympower has teamed up with Optimus Energy, the largest renewables aggregator in Greece, expanding its portfolio to 300 MW of daily demand response capacity in that country, it said on Thursday.

“This effort helps to stabilise Greece’s energy grid, and build resilient, future-proof energy infrastructure,” Sympower said in a statement.

Since entering Greece’s balancing markets in June of 2023, Sympower has been managing the largest demand response portfolio, comprising 70 MW of aggregated flexible resources. Demand response enables energy-intensive consumers, such as commercial and industrial concerns, to alter the consumption of their flexible, non-critical equipment within 15-minutes when requested by the TSO to stabilise the electricity grid and prevent power outages.

The TSO remunerates demand response participants for making their capacity available to the grid and, when activated, for balancing it.

According to Sympower, companies able to provide at least 1 MWh per day can expect additional annual gross revenues of EUR 45,000/MW.

Stella Zacharia, the CEO of Optimus Energy, announced that in the near future the company also plans to expand into stand-alone battery storage optimisation and active management of distributed renewable energy plants.
