BiH virtual plants aggregate 200 MW of renewables in 2023

Seven virtual power plants have managed to aggregate 200 MW of renewable energy capacity in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) to date, the country’s independent system operator Nos told Montel on Wednesday.

This is more than a 66% increase in capacity since March this year, but 50 MW less than Nos had expected would be achieved by the end of 2023.

The virtual power plant model, endorsed by Nos in 2022, gave producers connected to the distribution grid the opportunity to sell their output through classical trading on a high voltage network. Previously, producers on the distribution grid could only sell their energy to renewables market operators in BiH’s two entities at a fixed and previously determined price.

Since the model has been introduced, renewable energy producers have been increasingly abandoning the existing subsidy scheme and joining virtual power plants, as they allow them to sell their output on the wholesale market at a price higher than the guaranteed purchase price.
