ERS, the power utility of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s (BiH) Republika Srpska entity, has extended a public call inviting 50,000 households to sign prosumer contracts, its spokeswoman told Montel on Friday.

The public call, issued on 15 August, had originally been planned to close on 15 September but the new deadline is now 15 October.

ERS spokeswoman Ana Bokonjic told Montel that so far several thousand households which want to install rooftop solar panels, have submitted their documentation.

“These numbers are changing every day,” Bokonjic said.

On 26 August, ERS also lowered the criteria for households to participate in this tender to attract more interest.

Under the plan, ERS would provide the initial funding for rooftop installations while households may apply for subsidies. Low-income households with an annual consumption of below 3 MWh would also be given priority status.

The project could result in the entity achieving around 250 MW of additional solar capacity.

According to the ERS energy sustainability programme, which was also endorsed by the government, prosumers in Republika Srpska could potentially generate around 265 GWh of electricity a year, which would ease the pressure on ERS as universal supplier and enable more electricity exports.

The Republika Srpska entity passed a new law on renewable energy sources on 23 February, which introduced the prosumer category.

In May, ERS signed its first ten prosumer contracts as part of a pilot project aimed at exploring the benefits of solar energy for household use.

BiH’s other, Federation (FBiH) entity is also expected to pass a new law on renewable energy sources later this year.
