Germany’s Steag Solar Energy Solutions (Sens) and the Austrian LSG Group will start building another 50 MWp solar farm in Bulgaria this November, after successfully completing the first 66 MWp solar project in that country.

This was announced at the end of September by Sens LSG, a joint venture between the two companies formed with the aim of exploring photovoltaic markets in eastern and south-eastern Europe.

Construction work on the joint venture's first solar project in Bulgaria began in March, and the 66 MWp solar plant was connected to the local grid “a few months later,” Sens LSG said in a press release. The plant will be generating 100 GWh of renewable energy annually.

“The recently completed solar project won’t be the last, however,” the press release states, adding that Sens LSG wants to actively promote the expansion of renewable energy in Bulgaria, having already planned another 50 MWp solar farm in that country.

“We recognised the potential of the European East early on,” says LSG Group managing director Karl Goeth.

“But until now, the country’s approval for the expansion of solar energy has been lacking. Thanks to the climate target set by the EU, we can now use Bulgaria’s climatic and ecological potential to tackle large solar parks sooner rather than later,” he added in the press release.
