Moldovan government to prepare programme for restructuring energy sector

The Moldovan government will prepare a programme for restructuring of the energy sector in order to turn energy enterprises owned by the state into effective and competitive entities, the Minister of Economy, Valeriu Lazar, said at a meeting of the commission for improving the situation in the energy sector on 3 February 2010.

This programme will also serve to solve the problem of debts held by energy sector enterprises.

We have taken over too heavy a burden in the energy sector to be able to solve its problems in four to five months, Lazar said, noting that energy company debts to Moldovagaz amounted to US$ 200 million.

Participating in the meeting, Prime Minister Vladimir Filat asked the National Agency for Energy Regulation to audit the energy enterprises to clarify their real situation and to identify eventual ways to improve it.

Currently, the state owns three power plants and two electricity distribution companies.

In another context, the CEO of the RED Union Fenosa (the largest power distribution company in Moldova), Silvia Radu, said that the contract between her company and the state enterprise Energocom, which ensures power supplies from the Transnistria-based Kuchurgan power plant, expired in March 2010. She said that RED Union Fenosa would hold negotiations to identify advantageous offers.

The new law on electric energy enters into force in March 2010. It gives the go-ahead to the liberalisation of the power market.
