Development calls for an 18 per cent increase of electricity prices

A raise in electricity prices was imperative for the development projects of EPS, as the current prices were by some 17.9 per cent too low with regard to the figure that would enable their implementation, Dragomir Markovic, Director of Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) told to Tanjug at the international conference on renewable energies, which was held on July 21 and 22 in Mokra Gora or more precisely at the ethno village Drvengrad – ecological oasis not far away from Zlatibor, which was founded by renowned Serbian film director Emir Kusturica.

Markovic also said that providing Serbia would generate up to five per cent of overall electricity from renewables, this could result in an increase of electricity prices in the country by about half a Euro cent per kilowatt hour.

Head of EPS further said that major investments into electric power sector were ahead, noting that by 2014, Serbia should be completely independent from electricity imports, providing of course that the plans are realised. He added that they could ensure energy security by means of diversification and using new energy sources, as well as through regional cooperation and joint renewable energy projects in the region.

Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining of Republika Srpska Slobodan Puhalac said during the conference that Republika Srpska was using only a third of its hydropower potential and that unused capacities represented an immense development opportunity as well as obligation. After the opening of the conference he said in a statement for the Srna press agency that Serbia and Republika Srpska had a lot in common as regarded regional energy development, a unique approach to using the countries’ hydropower potentials and a lot in common with regard to the projects on border rivers, and that they also shared common views on using renewable energy sources. Puhalac said that the respective conference was extremely interesting for Republika Srpska, for a vast number of common activities of both power utilities (in Serbia and Republika Srpska).
