Christian Dolezal, spokesman of the Nabucco Consortium announced that the construction of this pipeline project is due to start in 2011. He spoke at an energy conference dubbed “New Energy Strategy” which was held in Sofia and organized by Capital Weekly with the support of the World Bank and the Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism.

According to him, the pipeline might start supplying gas in 2014 if everything goes according to plan. In 2010, the financing is expected to be provided together with the final investment plan. He assured the audience that once the pipeline was constructed, it would not only supply gas but open opportunities for new business investments like gas storages and hubs which would be in favour of Turkey as well.PHOTO: iStockphoto
Regarding the main question of where will the natural gas come from, Dolezal said that around two million tons of gas were expected to come from three sources i.e. north fields of Iraq in Kurd regions and fields in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. Despite a recent drop in gas consumption and the predictions of a decrease for another few years, Dolezal commented that in the long run, he expected an increase in the demand.
The upcoming conference on energy security in the wide Black Sea region which will be held in Sofia on March 1 and 2 will provide a clearer picture on the Nabucco pipeline.
