Russia, China and India in mutual cooperation with IEA for the first time
For the first time Russia, China and India as partner countries cooperated at the ministerial meeting of the International Energy Association (IEA), which took place in Paris this week. The Agency expressed satisfaction on account of mutual cooperation of the above-mentioned countries in discussions regarding the energy-related challenges. According to IEA, this is a positive step in recognizing joint, energy-related interests and concerns.

At the meeting IEA adopted three joints statements upon agreement of all three countries. The Agency reports that joint statements are based on the long-term successful cooperation in the field of energy industry with each of the above-mentioned countries. At the same time, a framework for future joint cooperation has been set up, as the statements have already been project-based.
We are talking about joint cooperation in the activities of IEA, efforts to provide energy reliability and energy efficiency in the field of renewable sources of energy, concerns regarding the provision of cleaner coal and technological cooperation. The agreement on future cooperation with the Russian Federation is important mainly because Russian Federation is not only an important member of the G8 group but is also one of the most influential countries in the world economy. Nonetheless, China and India also have a great influence on the world economy and for that all three countries could significantly contribute to the development of renewable energy sources in the future.
Energy issues require international measures
The world is facing great environmental, safety and economic challenges and all of them are related to energy. At the meeting, the ministers of 28 member states of the IEA and of the European Commission expressed their intention to jointly combat these challenges, thus ensuring a reliable, sustainable and cleaner energy future, said Nobuo Tanaka, the executive director of the IEA, at the end of the meeting in Paris.
About 65 percent of the greenhouse gases is produced from the energy use and production and IEA recognizes that the expenses arising from the lack of action in the field of climate changes would be greater than the expenses if the action is taken. For that reason they agreed to take on international measures to improve energy efficiency and to promote increased use of low carbon technologies.
The goal remains the same: in order to avoid catastrophic climate changes, the CO2 emissions have to be reduced by 2020. Another goal is to reduce total emissions of greenhouse gases in developed countries by 80 percent. Globally, these emissions are to be reduced by fifty percent by the year 2050.
Suitable key investments and transparent market

The ministers supported the proposal of establishment of a clean energy technology platform which would also include the non-member states and some international organisations. An important future role of transparent energy markets, suitable investments and reliable data and statistics for promotion of energy reliability has also been indicated at the meeting. We should take advantage of the current economic crisis and take the opportunity to invest into cleaner and more reliable energy.

IEA was established 35 years ago. Its purpose was to present efficient solutions in problems concerning oil supply and provision of reliable and cost-effective energy. During the years since its establishment, global energy demand has increased by 96 percent, gross domestic product by 167 percent, and population by 66 percent. IEA issued a special publication on the occasion of its 35 anniversary.
