German Siemens to partake in the nuclear project Belene
Topic: Electricity , Energy policy
Following the withdrawal of the German concern RWE which has left behind a 49-per cent stake, German Siemens finally joined the project for construction of the Bulgarian nuclear power plant Belene, as Bulgarian press agency Novinite.com reports. Bulgaria's previous cabinet contracted Germany's Siemens along with French Areva and the Russia's Atomstroyexport to build the respective plant. Siemens is said to have already delivered their technical and financial bid to the Russian partner.

According to the statement by the Russian party, the contribution of Siemens to the project is above all the state-of-the-art technology in this field. Hence, Western companies will supply instrumentation and control systems to Belene which is a power plant of the eastern VVER-1000 class.

RWE's departure from the project has put extra pressure on the investment which is heavy as it is – the government has estimated the investment of the 2,000 megawatt power plant at 10 billion Euros – and in particular on the government who now has to find new investors. For now, Bulgarian power utility NEK has a majority stake in the plant, yet the government plans to cut its share in the project – due to increasing costs – from 51 to between 20 and 30 per cent.
